Book Review: World War II Novel

John Raikkonen's Life is an Amazing Song captures life during the Russian/Finish war-during World War II-through the sight of a young boy. The tragedy of war is depicted through vivid details; however, the story progression revolves around facing adversity head on and conquering it. While the text portrays the grim conditions of war, it also demonstrates the impact of war on children and their coming-of-age well ahead of their time.

The novel begins with the disturbing image of a seven year-old and a four-year-old, Juha (the protagonist), "lighting up" a shoestring. The description of the smoke serves as a metaphor, which is strongly indicative of the trials and tribulations of war. Throughout the narration of the war, the Juha's energy and curiosity is undoubtedly apparent in his unquenchable desire for knowledge. An ideal example of this occurs when Juha asks Rake, "Where do babies come from?"

Juha, is sent to live with his grandparents during the war. Despite enjoying every minute with his grandparents-who have no lack of money-Juha feels a sense of guilt for the difficult life that his sister and mother lead in their war-ravaged hometown. After the war the family is reunited-until the divorce of Juha's parents-and Juha learns what it means to work hard for mere survival.

Life is an Amazing Song paints a picture of Juha's working as a bellboy, then receiving an invitation to the land of opportunity-the United States of America. This invitation, as odd as it may seem, arrives in the form of an American tourist, for whom Juha is not only a guide, but almost a son. Mr. Schwab, a Philadelphia resident, suffers from loneliness following the death of his wife. He requests that Juha come live with him-for free-and attend school in the States.

From this point forward in the book, there are myriad mixed emotions-anticipation, curiosity, nostalgia, and sadness encompassing Juha. However, he realizes that the opportunity for a better future beckons and he cannot pass it by. Ultimately, the take-home message of this novel is for one to appreciate the journey or the song that is life.
