Owning a firearm is a constitutional right that many Americans enjoy. Whether you own a weapon for personal security reasons or you are a gun collector, you should always keep safety at the forefront of your priorities. This is especially the case if there are ever children around your firearms. Owning a gun is a legal right but it also comes with it a great need for personal responsibility. If you or someone you know owns a gun, you should be, at the very least, aware of basic safety tips that can save your life.
First, make sure that when you pick up a gun it is pointed in a safe direction. Assume that the gun in loaded. You will want to make sure to check to see if it indeed has ammunition in it. Keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to fire. A gun should remain unloaded unless you are prepared to use it. Know both your target and what is beyond. Remember that bullets can travel a great distance.
Make sure that the gun is safe to operate. This means making sure you know exactly how to operate the weapon, including any and all safety mechanisms. Properly clean the weapon as well. This should be done frequently. A weapon should always be unloaded before cleaning.
Next, always make sure to store guns properly. Invest in a secure gun safe and always store ammunition separate from the weapons. Keep guns out of the reach of children and any other unauthorized persons. If children are old enough to use the guns, make sure they do so after being properly trained and only under the supervision and guidance of yourself or another authorized adult.
Lastly, never operate a weapon under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any prescription medication. Always wear proper ear and eye protection. If you have any questions or concerns at all regarding gun laws, regulations or safety, consult the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (http://www.atf.gov). - 39468
