Seeking Common Ground In Politics

As far back children we are taught to avoid two subjects in polite conversation politics and religion.

The topics are considered taboo by some because people hold such strong opinions about them. So, in order to keep the peace, we are told to avoid talking about them in public. It is considered the polite thing to do.

Wars are fought are fought over politics and religion because they are such personal subjects. People feel deeply about them and it is hard for them to see opposing views. They may feel threatened by others' differences and cling to what they know.

Those who feel that strongly are usually unwilling to open their minds to see others viewpoints. They are more comfortable with the familiar and don't like change. They may be unable to go beyond their comfort zone.

In politics, discussions about controversial subjects are often troublesome. Debates get heated and often little is accomplished. Sometimes insults are thrown. Many times the subjects get tabled for lack of a consensus on how to solve the issue.

Political settings can bring together people who feel vehemently about their side of an issue. They are so motivated by their beliefs that they are unlikely to see the other side of the issue.

Politics - According to the Bible: A Comprehensive Resource for Understanding Modern Political Issues in Light of ScriptureSometimes the only way to find common ground in the world of politics is to elect politicians to represent your particular view. That way they are likely to vote as you would like when particular issues are being considered. However, to ensure that your views are being represented, you have to remember to vote. Research the politicians that support as many of your views as possible. You may want to stump for them or volunteer for their campaign to ensure they are elected or stay in office.

Finding enough supporters for your position will enable you to influence politicians to pass legislation that will further your agenda. This can be done with a lot of time, effort and devotion to your cause. - 39468
